Merson Backing “Phenomenal” Ex Chelsea Ace To Solve West Ham’s Striker Problems

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson says West Ham would be a “perfect” destination for former Chelsea forward Diego Costa.

The 32-year-old left Atletico Madrid last week, after having his contract terminated, and he is now available on a free transfer. With the Hammers lacking options up front, Merson believes the former Spanish international would be an excellent addition to their squad:

“He would be great for West Ham, perfect for West Ham, absolutely perfect. The way West Ham play at the moment, he could be the missing link, he could be the missing link. I think he is a phenomenal football player, but he is a warrior as well on top of that.”

It remains to be seen whether Costa holds any interest in moving back to the Premier League. He reportedly left Atletico due to personal problems, although it is said that he wants his next club to be in Europe.

There are also other factors to consider. The Spaniard does have a checkered past when it comes to discipline, and there would be a concern he would disrupt the harmony inside the dressing room. Even so, as Merson says, he would be a very good signing were the player to be open to the move.
