West Ham have held “talks” with Burnley about signing winger Maxwel Cornet, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.
The journalist claims the Hammers would prefer to snap up the Ivorian international on an initial loan deal, but they will face competition from Everton:
West Ham United have held initial talks with Burnley over the signing of Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet. West Ham thought to favour a loan. Everton have been in talks about signing him. It is understood Cornet has a £17.5m release clause. #MaxwelCornet #WHUFC #BurnleyFC

Fans on Twitter are very much split on whether recruiting Cornet on loan is realistic:
I think loan is the right option only if we are keeping what we have in the squad

Don’t think 17m is a problem because we were going to spend that on kostic anyway
Just trying to explore a loan first I guess

If one team wants a loan and the other to buy, I wonder who Burnley would go for?!

Cornet is certainly an interesting option. It has been assumed that manager David Moyes is targeting him to strengthen his front line, but there is also a possibility that he is being considered as a wingback.
Chelsea were linked with the Cornet for the same reason earlier this summer and insider ExWHUemployee has mentioned the 25-year-old as a potential alternative to Filip Kostic.
Either way, it seems unlikely that Burnley would accept loaning out Cornet, when there are teams like Everton who could be prepared to pay his £17.5m release clause. The player, though, may have other ideas and there is a chance he’d prefer a switch to the London Stadium.
