“Ideal For The Hammers” Johnson Claims Chelsea Have Done West Ham A Real Favour By Agreeing To 26M Transfer

Former West Ham and Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson believes the Hammers have done very well to secure the signing of Kurt Zouma from the Blues.

The Frenchman moved to the London Stadium for £26m before the transfer window closed, and Johnson says he did raise an eyebrow when Chelsea decided to sell him:

“From a Chelsea perspective, I’m surprised they’ve sold him. There clearly must be something between him and Thomas Tuchel because otherwise, they wouldn’t have let him go, even though I don’t know that personally. He’s a very good player and for him to turn up at West Ham is ideal for the Hammers.”

Zouma looks like a great fit for manager David Moyes’ style of play. The 26-year-old is a commanding presence in the air and he has experience of playing in a back four and a three-man defence.

It took a while to get the transfer over the line, with Zouma’s wage demands said to be a major obstacle, but they managed to seal the deal for the France international in the end.

Moyes now has three experienced centre-backs in Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson, while Issa Diop can also plug gaps when required. West Ham should, therefore, be well covered when they need to change the backline due to injuries or suspensions throughout the campaign.
