Hernandez targets European football at West Ham

West Ham striker Javier Hernandez has expressed his desire to achieve European football with the club this season.

The Mexican is one of a number of new arrivals at the London Stadium this summer, with Slaven Bilic aiming to build a squad capable of finishing in the top 6 of the Premier League. He is joined by Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has joined on a season-long loan alongside his former team-mate Pablo Zabaleta who joined on a free transfer. Stoke winger Marko Arnautovic joined in a club-record fee, with midfielder Sead Haksabanovic signing from Halmstads earlier this week.

Hernandez is excited by the new arrivals at West Ham, praising Joe Hart who he describes as a great professional. The forward hopes the club’s business this summer can help them to qualify for continental competition next season.

“The European spots are the main goal for us this season. No doubt,” the 29-year-old said.

“Joe Hart is a great lad, a great professional. He always gives 100 per cent on the training ground.”

“He has been in the national team for so long, playing in the Champions League, he is a great goalkeeper.”

Hernandez, who scored 59 goals during his time at Manchester United, will find himself playing the club on the opening day of the season, two years after leaving Old Trafford. He admitted he is unsure whether or not he will celebrate if he scores.

“I don’t know if I will celebrate if I score at Old Trafford,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s my old club, my old fans, my old stadium but it’ll be my first goal for West Ham.”

“I am not thinking about the celebration, I just want to have the chance to start and get my team the result.”

“I am very happy and glad, it’s the best way to come back and open at Old Trafford.”

“I am a Hammer, a West Ham player, I want to do even better than I did in Manchester.”
