Ex-West Ham striker Frank McAvennie believes his former club should target Jose Mourinho if they dispense with the services of David Moyes.
The likes of former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel have been mentioned as potential candidates to replace Moyes but McAvennie feels Mourinho would be a better option:
“Would he [Pochettino] come in and take the job? He’d come in and make players better that’s for sure. I don’t know if the fans would want [Thomas] Tuchel, they didn’t want [Manuel] Pellegrini. I don’t know who is out there. I always wanted [Jose] Mourinho in there, he’d be a great fit. Because he doesn’t stand for fools.”
“Everything he said about Man United came true, didn’t it? He got absolutely crucified for it but [Paul] Pogba and all of them, [Luke] Shaw, [Harry] Maguire not good enough and all of a sudden everyone notices that now. I wanted him years ago but I don’t know if he’d be accepted now. It wouldn’t be a problem for me that’s for sure. He’s a winner, he wins. Everywhere he goes he wins something.”
The former Chelsea and Manchester United head coach (who has won 25 major trophies) is currently with Roma in Italy so it is debatable whether he would be an attainable target for the Hammers anyway.
His style of football isn’t exactly great on the eye either so you can’t see him lasting long at the London Stadium if the results are not there.
You also have to consider Mourinho’s sizeable salary demands, which would be another barrier to the 59-year-old joining the club.
For the time being, West Ham seem to be sticking with Moyes. With the Irons just above the relegation zone, though, an upturn in form will need to happen very soon for him to stay in his job.
