Hammers fume at reckless Carroll

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has fumed at striker Andy Carroll for his sending off against Burnley on Saturday, something which meant the Hammers had to play almost the entire game with 10-men.

The Hammers went 1-0 up via Michail Antonio’s goal, but had Andy Carroll sent off for two bookable offences within two minutes of each other – meaning his side had to cope with a man down.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw, but West Ham will feel more than hard done by thanks to Carroll, prompting manager Slaven Bilic to slam the forward who was only last week tipped for an England call-up.

“For a player of Andy’s experience… basically, you can’t do that,” said Bilic after the game.

“It was a big blow for us. I’m very disappointed and angry as well.”

“I’m very disappointed, but not with the referee’s decision. The first one can happen, but the second one, you can’t do that a couple of minutes later, especially when you play away you are asking for trouble.”

“You don’t go for that ball normally because it’s out of reach, but he went to win that ball. It was just an unbelievably bad decision and bad challenge to even go there.”

Defender Pablo Zabaleta also hit out at his teammates sending off, admitting Carroll’s challenge looked aggressive.

“From my point of view, it looks aggressive, especially the second one when he knew he was on a yellow already.”

“We can talk sometimes about situations with the referee and we can complain about some fouls, but there is nothing to say about the referee today. I think these two challenges, Andy’s challenges, were a bit nasty.”

“It’s the second time we have had a player sent off after a few minutes in the first half.”

“We need to be more careful because in the Premier League, playing with one player less for 80 minutes is really hard.”

“Then, we were 1-0 up and we need to be a bit more clever in these situations.”

“Playing with 10 men, it was sometimes hard for him to track back and work all the time, but you need to do that.”

“When you play as a winger, you have to be dangerous going forward – but you also have to come back to your position and help the team defensively.”
