Four Things That Need To Happen For West Ham To Avoid The Drop

With a nightmare fixture list coming up, it has led some pundits to tip West Ham for relegation. The Hammers are not in particularly good shape after letting slip yet another lead against Brighton last weekend, and arresting the slide will be a challenge.

They have lost 19 points from winning positions this campaign, and they now find themselves in the relegation zone on goal difference.

So, how can manager David Moyes turn the situation around and make sure that the team avoids the drop?

Press the “next page” as we look at four things that need to go right for West Ham to ensure Premier League survival:

1) Jarrod Bowen has to hit the ground running

The Hammers has spent £22m on the 23-year-old, and are reportedly paying him £80k a week in wages to score the goals that will get them out of trouble.

It remains to be seen whether this was a panic buy or not but West Ham supporters will be praying he gets on the scoresheet early on and begins to fire the Irons up the table.

2) Soucek must provide goals and bring an assured presence in midfield

The Czech international was played out of position against Brighton, playing in a more advanced role, but the midfielder looked like a decent player on his debut, offering something different in the middle of the park.

Soucek scored 12 for Slavia Prague this campaign, and fans will be hoping he can bring that hot streak in front of goal to the Premier League.

3) Anderson and/or Lanzini have to rediscover their form

The Brazilian and the Argentine have bags of ability, but they have been shadows of the players they were this season.

If West Ham are to get out of this mess, one of these two playmakers must rediscover their form and create the chances the likes of Bowen and Sebastien Haller can put away.

4) Moyes must find some defensive solidity

The Hammers have conceded 10 goals in their last four games, which is not the type of thing you would expect under a team managed by David Moyes.

He can only work with the players at his disposal, though, but the only way that the team will get results against the likes of City and Liverpool in the coming weeks is if they tighten up at the back.
