FIVE Of The WORST Deadline Day Panic Buys Made By Premier League Teams

Sometimes a club’s well-thought-out plans in the transfer market are laid to waste by failing to land their top targets or by an injury crisis.

It usually leads to a massive scramble in the final days of the transfer window in order to find a player who can be signed before the deadline.

There are examples where these last-ditch deals have worked out but, for the most part, the signing ends up being a disaster for the club involved.

Press the next page as we list five of the worst panic buys made by Premier League clubs on deadline day.

Radamel Falcao – Manchester United (2014)

The Colombian international had been a prolific scorer during his three spells at Porto, Atletico Madrid and Monaco but he arrived at United following a serious knee injury.

Falcao cost the Manchester club a loan fee in the region of £6m to £10m, depending on what report you read. During his stay at Old Trafford, he scored just four goals.

Papy Djilobodji – Chelsea (2015)

Manager Jose Mourinho wanted Raphael Varane or John Stones to shore up his defence but he was given a little-known Senegalese defender from Nantes instead.

Unsurprisingly, Djilobodji only made one appearance for Chelsea, which was a brief cameo in the League Cup. Within a few months, he was loaned out to Werder Bremen before leaving for Sunderland on a permanent basis.

Paul Konchesky – Liverpool (2010)

New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson needed a left-back and he turned to one of his former Fulham players on the last day of the 2010 summer transfer window.

Konchesky lasted just as long as Hodgson at Anfield. When the manager was sacked in January 2011, the defender was loaned out to Nottingham Forest in the same month before moving permanently to Leicester.

Grzegorz Rasiak – Tottenham (2005)

Spurs paid Derby £3m for the Polish international, hoping that the striker would replicate some of the form he showed in the Championship, having scored 16 goals in 35 matches for the Rams.

However, Rasiak played just nine times during his spell at White Hart Lane, scoring no goals, before being loaned out to Southampton just six months after joining the London club.

Park Chu-Young – Arsenal (2011)

The South Korean international was all set to sign for Lille before a late call from the Gunners led to the striker checking out of his hotel in France and taking the next flight to England.

However, following his €5 million switch, Chu-Young only made seven appearances during his three seasons at Arsenal, scoring just once.
