FIVE Of The WORST Deadline Day Panic Buys Made By Premier League Teams (Part 2)

After we listed five deadline day panic buys last week, we have decided to take a look at another five transfers that failed to go to plan after clubs made a last-minute purchase.

Having to sign a player on the last day of the transfer window already suggests that a team has failed to land their top targets.

It means many are left to scramble around for players who may be available but are not necessarily the best options. Invariably, these signings are far more likely to end up being failures.

Press the next page as we go through some of the worst purchases made on deadline day.

Islam Slimani – Leicester

The Algerian had had a successful stint with Sporting Lisbon in Portugal but the Foxes paid well over the odds when they signed him for £28m in 2016.

Slimani only scored 13 goals during his time at the King Power Stadium, going out on three loan spells (to Newcastle, Fenerbahce and Monaco) before leaving for Lyon on a free transfer.

Danny Drinkwater – Chelsea

The idea of linking up N’Golo Kante with his former midfield partner at Leicester had some merit, but paying £35m for him was pretty nonsensical.

Drinkwater’s injury record and poor discipline away from the pitch made the deal look even worse. The midfielder left Stamford Bridge FIVE YEARS after joining them, having made only 23 appearances.

Stephane Dalmat – Tottenham

The Frenchman was brought in on loan from Inter Milan by manager Glenn Hoddle in 2003, but he failed to last the season due to injuries and poor discipline.

Dalmat was involved in a training ground altercation with a young Jamie O’Hara and he was sent packing back to Italy two months early.

Alex Iwobi – Everton

The Toffees’ decision to spend £35m on the Nigerian international sums up the club’s poor decision-making in the transfer market in recent years.

No one is doubting that Iwobi has bags of ability but his lack of end product has always been his downfall, and Arsenal probably couldn’t believe their luck when they received the bid from Everton in 2019.

Andre Santos- Arsenal

The Brazilian is not well liked among Gunners supporters, mainly due to the fact that he swapped shirts with Robin van Persie when Arsenal faced their former player after his controversial switch to Manchester United.

In terms of Santos’s performances, though, he wasn’t that impressive either, making 33 appearances over two seasons before moving back to Brazil on a free transfer.
