Five Of The Most Underrated Players Of The Premier League Era

Being ‘underrated’ is very subjective so for this five-man list of Premier League players, we have decided to go with stars who have had very long careers in the top flight but are not necessarily given the credit they deserve.

All the players included are English, which is a coincidence, but it is not surprising considering fans tend to underappreciate players who either come through the youth ranks or don’t tend to stand out like a glamorous foreign recruit.

There are many more who could have been added to this list and there are likely some who merited inclusion but missed out for whatever reason.

Press the next page as we go through the five most underrated players in Premier League history (according to us).

Mark Noble

West Ham’s captain is not underrated by Hammers fans but he is certainly not as appreciated by the wider public as he should be considering his performances for the London club.

Noble made his debut in 2004, 16 years ago, and he has accrued 495 senior appearances for his club, with 60 goals and 59 assists. The fact that he doesn’t have an England cap is pretty shocking considering the number of average midfielders that have been selected by the national team over the years.

James Milner

Milner made his professional debut even earlier than Noble, making his first appearance for Leeds in 2002 before going on to play for Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool.

He has won every single domestic trophy, as well as the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup during his career all the while playing in several different positions.

Leon Osman

One club players can be underappreciated by those who don’t support the team they play for and, like with Noble, Osman suffered the same fate at Everton.

Osman was a regular in the Toffees starting line up for eleven years between 2004 and 2015. However, rather than retiring whilst he was still at Goodison Park, he was actually released in 2016 before hanging up his boots.

Michael Carrick

Again, his teammates and supporters of United did appreciate the former West Ham midfielder’s talents, but to the wider public, his poor performances in an England shirt stuck firmly in the memory.

Some say he wasn’t given enough of a chance at international level but he was capped 34 times. For United, though, he never disappointed, picking up five league titles, four domestic cups and two European trophies over 12 years.

Gareth Barry

Another English central midfielder, a common theme on this list, the former Manchester City and Aston Villa star certainly deserves a lot more recognition than he gets.

Barry holds the record for the most Premier League appearances, surpassing Ryan Giggs, and he is still playing football to a good standard in the Championship at the grand old age of 39.
