Does This West Ham United Starlet Deserve An England Callup?

West Ham United’s Ben Johnson is perhaps one of the Premier League’s most underrated talents – it’s a crying shame that the has yet to receive a look-in for the England squad.

An excellent crosser of the ball and an underrated defender, the 23-year-old has a surprisingly wide skillset for such a young age. Additionally, he gets better with each passing game – he always seems willing to grow and learn.

Sadly, England have no shortage of quality right-back options at this point in time. Kieran Tripper, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Reece James are all ahead of Johnson in the pecking order.

Additionally, these players play for some of the biggest clubs in the country – such as Liverpool and Manchester City – and England’s setup has noticeably favoured players from more successful clubs over the last couple of decades.

Should Johnson fail to win an England cap over the course of his career, sadly, it would not be the first time a West Ham player has been criminally overlooked by the Three Lions. Mark Noble was brilliant for West Ham for decades – yet, he was never given a single cap.

West Ham have had some brilliant players in the England squad over the years – the most notable of which was Bobby Moore, who captained them to their sole World Cup victory in 1966.
