Mainz have clinched the signing of West Ham midfielder Edimilson Fernandes, the club have confirmed.
Reports indicate that the Hammers will receive around £8m from the German side for the Swiss international.
West Ham signed Fernandes from Sion for approximately €5m in August 2016 so the club will make some profit out of the deal.
However, a majority of fans on Twitter are disappointed that Manuel Pellegrini didn’t give the player more of a chance in the first team:
A shame but understandable.
Didn’t get a chance with us but don’t think we will have many opportunities to give him one next season. Think the season for him to step up was last when he was in Italy, I actually think that decision was the mistake rather than this one.

shouldn’t have gone, did well enough at a Fiorentina to stay for at least this season to prove himself, looked very dynamic too.
shame tbh

Put it towards Gomes as replacement

I’d have liked to give him another go after a season away tbh

Can’t say I agree with this one, but if he’s isn’t going to be used, then probably the right deal for club and player.

So sad to see him leave. Showed such promise and was hoping he would come back to the 1st team this season

The 23-year-old spent last season out on loan at Fiorentina and performed quite well for the Serie A side.
Fernandes made 33 appearances for the Viola, scoring two goals and contributing two assists. Despite his regular game time, the Italian club did not take up their option to sign him permanently.
Instead, the Swiss midfielder will move to the Bundesliga with West Ham likely to use the money to fund their own transfer business this summer.
