Chief reveals West Ham continue to work hard & there’s still money to spend

West Ham have enjoyed a very busy but widely successful summer this term, with the Hammers landing key additions in the form of Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez.

The Hammers lost on the opening weekend 4-0 to Manchester United, a test that was always likely to see Slaven Bilic’s side come out empty-handed, but the optimism around the East London side this summer has been raised significantly following a disappointing debut campaign at the London Stadium.

West Ham face two further matches on the road against Southampton and Newcastle United before they return to their home ground, due to the World Athletic’s Championships being held this summer, but it’s clear the club is working very hard behind the scenes to push forward.

Chairman David Sullivan continues to be exceptionally busy in the boardroom as he looks to add further additions to Bilic’s ranks, including the potential addition of Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho on a club-record deal, and it’s now been revealed just how much effort Sullivan is putting in behind the scenes.

Speaking to Sky Sports, vice chairman Karen Brady revealed the sacrifices her boss is making this summer.

‘A lot of supporters don’t understand how stressful that whole period [the transfer window] is. My chairman is working 20 hours a day getting very little sleep, taking phone calls, morning, noon and night. He’s doing all of that to try and improve things for West Ham. It’s an incredibly stressful situation.’

‘I don’t deal with agents, my poor chairman has to deal with them — and I can tell you it’s incredibly stressful. There are people who come into the market who purport to represent players but don’t, that are working behind your backs, talking to players and turning their heads.’

‘They’re talking them out of deals, talking them into deals, talking you into deals — it’s stressful.’

Brady also revealed that Bilic continues to have money to spend as he sees fit, which suggests the reports of a collapse in the Carvalho deal due to Sporting Lisbon’s £40m asking price are premature, and fans can expect further activity between now and the end of August.
