Chicharito ‘ready’ for World Cup opener

West Ham striker Javier Hernandez says he is primed and ready for Mexico’s World Cup opener this afternoon against Germany.

El Tri take on the defending champions at the Luzhniki Stadium in the opening game of Group F today, and Hernandez will be hoping he can make his mark in what will be his third appearance at a World Cup finals.

Hernandez managed goals at both South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014, and the West Ham star says he hopes do repeat those feats this time round and shock Joachim Low’s side.

The Hammers No17 said: “In the World Cup, you have to play the bigger footballing nations. You cannot escape that and still think about winning the trophy, can you? Germany is a team. They have shown in past that they are used to reaching their peak whenever the Cup starts.

“With such a quality squad, they can dream about defending their title won in Brazil. But we shall try our best to make it difficult for them as much as possible.

“It will be decided on the pitch, not on paper. We are ready to face them.”

Hernandez is his country’s record goal-scorer, having managed 49 goals in 101 appearances.
