Bilic Continues West Ham Improvement

West Ham’s draw with Watford at the weekend, although not what they deserved off the back of their second half performance, marked a turning point in their season.

Go back a few months and West Ham were coming off the back of a run where they had lost to Watford, West Brom and Southampton, having conceded eleven goals, scoring four in reply, with two of those games at the London Stadium.

The draw at Vicarage Road marked the end of a run against the same teams, in which they beat the Saints comfortably and were unlucky to draw against both the Baggies and Walter Mazzarri’s side.

Although there are still issues, considering there have been two draws in games where, given their second half performances, the Hammers should have been taking three points as opposed to just one. Furthermore, despite coming through that run of three games unscathed, Slaven Bilic’s side went one down within 15 minutes in all three, meaning there is plenty for the Croat to work on before the end of the season.

However, given all that has been thrown at the former Hammers defender this season, with the move away from Upton Park, the trouble at the London Stadium, on and off the pitch, and the saga surrounding Dimitri Payet, the turnaround is frankly remarkable.

Add to that the fact Bilic managed to pull off a turn in fortunes when his job was under more scrutiny than ever before, to the point at which managers such as Roberto Mancini – having been linked with the job – watching on from the stands, he deserves huge credit.

Not only does Bilic deserve a pat on the back for his efforts, with his current deal expiring at the end of next season, it is high time messrs Gold, Sullivan and Brady backed their man and put a new contract on the table.

In moving to the London Stadium the club have embarked on a huge project and will need steady, yet ambitious, management to make the early years at their new home a success, in Bilic you have that.

You have to go back to Alan Pardew’s tenure to find a manager with a better win rate than Bilic’s (40%), with the former Crystal Palace and Newcastle boss only ahead by one percent.

The squad have shown faith and rallied behind their manager in recent weeks, it is time for the board to follow suit and back their manager.
