20 Premier League Clubs RANKED: Who Has The Highest Average Attendance In 2021/22?

The Premier League is one of the most popular leagues in the world and interest in the competition has only increased over the past few decades.

While the growth of TV rights does mean an ever greater number of matches are being broadcast, it hasn’t led to a slump in attendances as feared.

In fact, the English top-flight is second only to the Bundesliga in terms of the number of fans that visit grounds every weekend.

Press the next page as we rank all twenty Premier League teams based on their average league attendance this season (stats via Transfermarkt).

After being promoted to the Premier League, it is now Brentford that have the lowest attendance in the top flight this campaign. Two of the bottom four are relegation strugglers in Burnley and Watford, which does demonstrate how limited support can affect performances on the pitch.

20) Brentford – 16,864
19) Burnley – 19,011
18) Watford – 20,598
17) Crystal Palace – 24,121

It’s actually surprising to see how well-supported teams in English football actually are, as even teams like Norwich have an average attendance above 25,000. Brighton, who until the last decade could only fit 6,000 into an old athletics stadium, have been transformed by their move to the Amex.

16) Norwich City – 26,934
15) Southampton – 29,628
14) Wolves – 30,558
13) Brighton – 30,813

Chelsea and Everton are looking to expand or move grounds and it isn’t surprising considering that both are averaging below the 40,000 mark. It is believed that a key condition for Chelsea’s takeover by potential bidders is to promise around £1bn towards stadium expansion.

12) Leicester – 31,992
11) Leeds – 36,279
10) Chelsea – 38,013
9) Everton – 38,822

The phrase “the Emptyhad” has often been used to deride Manchester City’s inability to fill the Etihad but it appears to be a myth (for league games at least), going by the latest figures for this campaign. Liverpool’s capacity will increase to close to 60,000 when the new Anfield Road stand is completed so expect them to move up this list in a couple of years’ time.

8) Aston Villa – 41,859
7) Newcastle – 51,310
6) Manchester City – 52,671
5) Liverpool – 53,023

The newly built Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has led to Spurs shooting up the list but, despite having a bigger capacity than the London Stadium, West Ham come out on top in terms of average attendance. Manchester United remain top dogs in the Premier League, though, by quite some distance.

4) Tottenham – 55,238
3) West Ham – 58,099
2) Arsenal – 59,742
1) Manchester United – 73,058
